Here’s how you’ll use basic ingredients to make this easy tater tot casserole recipe that will surely become your new family favorite.
Brown the Beef
Preheat your oven to 350ºF (180ºC) and grab a large skillet to cook the ground beef over medium-high heat. Once browned, drain off any excess fat so your casserole doesn’t end up greasy.
I use regular ground beef for a full, rich flavor, but you can also switch to lean ground beef or ground turkey for lower fat. Then, add a pinch of salt and black pepper or half a teaspoon of Italian seasoning to boost flavor, especially since turkey meat tastes milder.
Cook with Aromatics
Add chopped onion and minced garlic, then let everything brown together until the beef is cooked through and the onions turn soft and translucent. If you don’t have fresh onion and garlic, add onion powder and garlic powder instead, about 1 teaspoon each.
Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and cream of mushroom soup. If you don’t have mushroom soup, you could try a different canned soup, condensed soup, or condensed cream. Try chicken soup for more savory depth, or sour cream for a slight tang.
Stir until the beef-soup mixture is well combined and creamy, then set the pan aside while you prep your casserole dish. A cast-iron skillet is ideal here because it heats evenly and retains heat well.
Layer the Ground Beef Mixture
Grease a 9×13 baking dish with a bit of butter or cooking spray so nothing sticks later. Spread the meat mixture in an even layer across the bottom of the dish using a silicone spatula, making sure you get it into all the corners for even coverage.
Place the frozen tater tots in neat rows on top of the beef layer, covering the entire surface. You want them close together so every bite has a crispy tot.

Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese generously over the tater tots, letting it fall between the gaps so it melts down into the casserole.
Bake Until Golden and Bubbly
Slide the casserole into your preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the tater tots are golden brown on top. You’ll know it’s ready when the edges are bubbling, and the tots have crisped up nicely.

Garnish and Serve
Pull the casserole from the oven, wearing oven mitts to protect your hands, and let the dish rest for a couple of minutes so the layers set slightly. Sprinkle fresh parsley over the top for a pop of color, then serve it warm straight from the baking dish.
Enjoy!
Tater Tot Casserole travels beautifully to potlucks and gatherings. Keep it warm by wrapping the dish in foil and then a thick towel to help hold heat for about an hour. You can also transport it in an insulated casserole carrier so it can stay hot for longer.

How to Store Leftovers
Let the casserole cool to room temperature, then cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or transfer portions to an airtight container and refrigerate for 3 to 5 days.
Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or warm the whole dish in a 350ºF oven for 15-20 minutes until heated through.
For longer storage, portion the casserole into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating, or bake it straight from frozen, adding 10-15 minutes to the heating time and covering with foil to prevent over-browning.
What to Serve With Tater Tot Casserole
I like to serve this casserole with a simple green salad tossed in ranch dressing or a tangy vinaigrette to cut through the richness. Roasted green beans, steamed broccoli, or roasted Brussels sprouts work well on the side, giving you veggies without much effort.
Cornbread or dinner rolls are perfect for soaking up the cheesy, savory sauce. If you’re feeding a crowd, set out pickles, corn, coleslaw, or a veggie tray with dip so people can balance out the hearty casserole.
The combination of crispy, creamy, and fresh sides makes the meal feel complete without adding extra work.

I’ve never seen tater tots that looked liked that. Is that a special kind or a regional difference?
Hi Joel! The tater tots in this recipe are standard store-bought frozen tater tots. The appearance might differ slightly due to lighting or how they’re arranged in the casserole. If they look significantly different, it could be due to how they browned during baking. Let me know if you have any other questions!
