Recipe Notes and Expert Tips

To get the most out of your Air Fryer Cheeseburger Casserole, keep these tips in mind:

  • Cheese: For the best melt and flavor, go with a good quality cheddar. You can also mix in some mozzarella for extra gooeyness.
  • Lean meat: Using lean ground beef or turkey not only makes this dish healthier but also reduces the amount of grease you need to drain off.
  • Veggies: Feel free to toss in some chopped bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, or mushrooms to the meat mixture for added nutrition and flavor. It’s a great way to use up leftover veggies that are sitting in your fridge.
  • Spice it up: If you like things a bit spicy, add a dash of chili powder or diced jalapeños to the meat as it cooks.
  • No air fryer: If you don’t have an air fryer, this casserole can easily be baked in a conventional oven. Here is our Cheeseburger Casserole recipe for the full instructions.
  • Double up: This recipe is perfect for doubling if you’re feeding a larger crowd or want leftovers for the week.
  • Garnishes: Besides parsley, consider topping with chopped green onions, sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, a drizzle of extra ketchup, mustard, or burger sauce, or even a sprinkle of bacon bits for added crunch and flavor.
  • Make ahead: You can assemble the casserole ahead of time and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to bake it in the air fryer. Just add a few extra minutes to the cooking time if you’re starting from cold.

How to Store Leftover Air Fryer Cheeseburger Casserole

Leftover casserole is one of my favorite things—it tastes just as good the next day if you store it right. I let it cool to room temperature first, then pop it into an airtight container and stick it in the fridge. It keeps well for up to 3 days, which makes it perfect for easy lunches or a second dinner later in the week.

When it’s time to reheat, I either microwave it or toss it back in the air fryer on a low setting so it warms through without drying out. If I’m using the air fryer, I usually cover it with foil to help keep the moisture in. And if I know we won’t eat it all right away, I’ll freeze it—just make sure it’s fully cooled, wrap it up tight, and it’ll keep for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight and it’s good to go.

Our Top 3 Money-Saving Tips for This Recipe

Making this Air Fryer Cheeseburger Casserole doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some savvy ways to keep your costs down:

  1. Use less meat: Use half the meat and add more macaroni or throw in some lentils to keep it filling but less expensive.
  2. Buy reduced for quick sale: Check for meat or cheese near its sell-by date, which shops often sell at a reduced price.
  3. Leftover makeover: Transform any uneaten casserole into a new meal, like stuffing for bell peppers or a topping for baked potatoes.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Cheeseburger Casserole

Here’s how to complement this dish perfectly and round out your meal:

Tangy Coleslaw

A tangy coleslaw can add a crisp and refreshing contrast to the casserole. The acidity from the dressing will cut through the richness of the cheese and meat, balancing out the flavors beautifully.

Sweet Potato Fries

Offer a side of baked sweet potato fries for a sweet and savory touch. Their natural sweetness pairs well with the savory casserole, and their crispy texture is a delightful contrast to the dish’s creaminess.

Baked Beans

A side of baked beans can enhance the meal with their smoky sweetness and make the dining experience feel like a backyard BBQ.
